BY GOD'S GRACE, MAY OUR FAMILY TREE BEAR GOOD FRUIT AS WE GROW TO KNOW & LOVE HIM MORE EACH DAY.

ANOTHER CURVE BALL

We bought her heart shaped cookies and ate them together in the waiting room. Smashed in close we sat, on the bench where I can still remember watching her and Beck play with the same roller coaster bead toys after our very first and very heavy appointment...

How could we have known the roller coaster we'd be getting on way back then?

She giggled in the parking lot as she held onto both Mommy and Daddy's hands...right there in the middle. It was an important day for Bea yesterday. And it will be an important year for her little life too as we blindly swing the bat once again at another curve ball.

. . . . . .

In September of 2016, as we prepared for Bea's next open heart surgery, the Fontan procedure which was to compliment the Glenn she received in April of 2015, we were thrown a curve ball when the team of cardiologists reviewing her circumstances decided not to proceed. It was a time of pause for us as we accepted what this meant for our daughter.

Nevertheless, we did accept and have continued to rest in God's will for Bea's heart to remain in an unfixable condition, meanwhile thanking the Lord that Beck's heart is now (nearly) fully repaired...a tough dichotomy to process for any parent's heart.

Then, without warning this past week, another curve ball swooped in hard and fast as we received news that the team of cardiologists who operated on Beck up at Stanford in April of 2016 believe that they can successfully operate on Bea.

Wait.

What???

Process.

Pray.

Specifically, Dr. Frank Hanley, deemed "the best heart surgeon on the planet" yesterday by Bea's cardiologist, made himself clear via second opinion that he believes Bea's complex heart is favorably repairable. She's been offered another chance.

As Brodie and I met with Bea's cardiologist to discuss the intricacies of this decision, we prayed in advance for clarity, unity, and an obvious answer. We know there is no such thing as "risk" with God who is in control over all things. We know that we can trust Him. But, we also want to walk in wisdom and listen for the Shepherd's voice. We want to know what HE would have us do for our daughter.

So, as we listened carefully to all of the reasons to proceed, and as we weighed the reasons not to, several indicators made our final decision clear. One, if Bea does not receive this (albeit complex) Fontan, she may/will probably become more and more blue (cyanotic) with time due to her low oxygen saturation levels. This in turn effects her learning capacity, which tugs powerful on the heart strings of any compassionate parent wanting the best for their child. Of course, we want to give Bea the brightest prospect possible to be able to learn and process and have as fully functioning a brain as she can have. Secondly, this lack of oxygen that Bea lives with and has lived with her whole life thus far will inevitably take it's toll on the rest of her vital organs. If we can help avoid this, why wouldn't we? Third, if Bea does not receive the procedure, her heart will likely begin to form abnormal veins to compensate and this malformation is critical because it complicates the likelihood of a successful heart transplant in the future for Bea, a potential inevitability for our little girl who lives with but half a heart. Lastly, though the surgeons at our local hospital did not feel it was wise to proceed here, when Brodie looked into our doctor's eyes yesterday and asked him point blank what he would do if it was his daughter...he chuckled and said with hesitation, "I knew you were going to ask me that." (Insert 3 second pause that felt like 3 hours.) "If she was my daughter," he said, "I would proceed with the operation with Dr. Hanley." And with that, what we both had already been sensing throughout the meeting was confirmed. It was a unanimous conclusion for Brodie and me as we prayed on the way home, then sent the decisive text.

We stopped off to get Bea one last goodie, hot chocolate for our girl. She gleamed from ear to ear the entire day, innocent and unaware. We're protecting her the best way we know how. We're entrusting her to her Maker. Our love for Bea swells.

And so, here we go again...preparing for open heart surgery most likely in the summer, thankful for this curve ball that of course the Lord saw coming, even planned from long ago. When our precious daughter lay newborn, abandoned in a hospital in Beijing, China no doubt by a broken heart of another kind - hopeful we can only assume for the welfare and future of the child...she was NOT alone.

"For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the LORD will take me in."
Psalm 27:10

Jesus was with Bea and He had (has) a great, redemptive plan for this special little girl.

"But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me."
2 Timothy 4:17

He's been with her all along. He's chosen to give her life. He has a new plan in store for Bea. And we're participating with as much "yes" as we can offer, swinging hard, playing by His rules, following the Leader, unafraid because He's a wise, loving, and sovereign good Father. Lord, be with us in the storm and may your will be done as we go from here...

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most Highwill abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
You will not fear the terror of the night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
You will only look with your eyes
and see the recompense of the wicked.
Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place—
the Most High, who is my refuge
no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
no plague come near your tent.
For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways.
On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.
You will tread on the lion and the adder;
the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.
“Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
I will protect him, because he knows my name.
When he calls to me, I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him.
With long life I will satisfy him
   and show him my salvation.”
Psalm 91

KITCHEN MAKEOVER - PART 1

When we bought our beloved home, we knew it was only a matter of time before we would need to do some work on the kitchen.

It was really small and walled in, and since we enjoy working as a team in the kitchen...we needed a little elbow room.

Slowly, but surely, we took down cabinetry and opened up walls and have lived with things in a bit of a ramshackle situation over the course of the past year. And now the time has come to start putting things back together in a more functional way for our family.

The truth is we don't mind things a tad rustic, and so living with a less-is-more kitchen this past year hasn't been so bad. Still, it will be a privilege to button up some loose ends, smooth a few rough edges, and create a space that can serve as the heart of our home.

We'll add some cabinets here and there, an island, open shelving, even appliances etc...eventually.

(Our living room doubling as the pantry for the time being.)

My favorite part of the kitchen is bound to be the farmhouse sink overlooking the backyard. The plan is to install casement windows that will open wide so breezes can freely waft in, a place to stand and gaze at nature and children at play, a mother's place of gratitude:

So, things are finally underway and phase 1 begins with more deconstruction.

Once the drop down ceiling is removed, the electric will be rerouted and lights will be installed. There will be support beams and dry wall and several phases to follow. For now, we're grateful for this next step in our kitchen makeover - part 1.

To be continued...

"Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain."
Psalm 127:1

MY FARM GIRL

Bread flour on her skirt, goat milk in the jar she just placed on the counter, purple potato ready to plant, and daydreams of raising sheep for wool she can spin and knit with...Elka is a farm girl through and through...and a little Proverbs 31 woman in the making.

She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands.
She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household.
With the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.
She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong.
She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle.
Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.
From Proverbs 31

PRECIOUS WILLOW

It's faces like these, expressions of uncommon adorableness amidst the ordinary, that have earned her name.

Precious.

Such feelings of overwhelming love spark just a glimpse of how He loves us.

"Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you..."
Isaiah 43:4

SEED SAVING

Been into seed saving lately.

From cosmos to pumpkins to cantaloupe, peppers, and just about anything in between...

We're learning as we go and venturing into new territory.

It just makes sense.

"And God said, 'Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth,
and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.'"
Genesis 1:29

There is so much to learn about God's Word through the art of agriculture.

"The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds,
and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good."
Genesis 1:12

SOURDOUGH!

We finally did it. (Or, I should say, Aida finally did it.)

We (I mean, she) finally started our sourdough starter.

It's so easy that's it's had me feeling a little bit like, umm...what were we waiting for??
And oh wow it's so delicious that I'm thinking we will never stop feeding our new little "pet".

YUM...Sourdough!

"Go, eat your bread with joy."
Ecclesiastes 9:7

. . . . . .

SIMPLE SOURDOUGH RECIPE:

1 1/2 tsp yeast
1 1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp honey
2 1/2 cups flour
2 cups sourdough starter
1/2 cup lukewarm water

Combine all ingredients, mix, knead.
Let rise 1 hour.
Deflate dough and form baguette or place in greased loaf pan.
Let rise 1 hour.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Bake 40-50 minutes.

. . . . . .

Thanks for the yummy bread, Aida!

"She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household."
Proverbs 31:15

...AND MORE CHICKS!

So I'll admit, we may have gotten a bit carried away by the cuteness at the feed store.

But when we drove 45 minutes for the Easter Eggers only to find that someone had just come in before us and bought them all...and the sweet kids had pooled their money in a mason jar back home in order to buy them and they handled the disappointment SO well...

...we couldn't help but stop off at another location just in case there were others to bring home instead.

(Paying here, with all of their dollars and coins. :))

And sure enough, there were others...and more others.

(I think we came home with 15 more???)

And now we have chicks...and more chicks!

And aw, it's all so fun and they will lay multicolored eggs and Aida got herself a couple of Silkies to go with her Cochins and why not just go for it anyway cuz this is why we built our coop bigger than our original needs and this is why we moved here and....

There are so many important life lessons being learned here in our new home.

"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it."
Proverbs 22:6

CHICKS!

For Boden's birthday, he reeeeeeally wanted to get a baby chick.

So, we made a plan and waited for his special day to add a few new family members to the crew.

SO FUN!!

Happy birthday boy...

Happy everyone!

When Aida saw the bin of Bantams, she couldn't resist and bought herself a new pet project.
We think they are Lavender Cochins with their little fluffy feet...We'll see! She plans to build them
their own coop and care for all their needs herself. We think it's a great idea full of responsibility!!

All the kids learn responsibility through our animal endeavors, which we love!

Precious Nova.

(Thanks for the Mom and Dad in action pic, Aida...and Brodie is taller than me I see!)

When we got home, everyone gathered around to enjoy our new babies...even the baby.

They will not be hurting for attention and handling. That's for sure!!

Lily has been so curious but also so gentle with them.

(Good girl, Lily.)

There's something about chicks that sings the sweet song of spring.

They really are so fun (and valuable to us) that I think we just might add a few more.

To be continued...

"For behold, the winter is past; the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth,
the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land."
Song of Solomon 2:11-12

BODEN IS...

On Boden's 6th birthday, he woke up to the cowboy hat "he's always wanted".

He didn't take it off all day, nor did his brothers.

PJs and all, these boys love their cowboy hats!! And how I love these boys!!

(Dressed and ready to go get baby chicks! ...Boden's idea of a party!)

Boden, your JOY and enthusiasm for life is endearing. You make everybody happy!

"A joyful heart is good medicine."

"CHICK-CHICK-CHICK"

That's all it takes.

And they come running!

A year ago the idea of chickens seemed like an exciting adventure we knew nothing about.

But, here we are a year later, gearing up to double (triple?) our flock...and loving every minute of our adventure!

"Know well the condition of your flocks."
Proverbs 27:23

BRODIE + WILLOW

He's so sweet with her.

They're best friends.

I just love teenage brothers with baby sisters...a favorite thing.

FIRST PONY RIDE

This week Willow had her first pony ride. We put her on wondering how she would react.

She LOVED it!! Why am I not surprised?

I'm not sure who was more excited, Willow or her siblings!

(I love this pic because it captures Willow's chickie hair.)

She giggled and smiled from ear to ear.

We've got another brave animal lover in the family!
Willow is never too far from the animals, this little nature baby of ours.

Then, everyone else had their turn.

There was lots of trotting going on this day. Nova has no fear! Mini person...mini horse.

Bea was feeling more confident than normal, getting so brave these days!

I love seeing that kind of growth. Animals are therapy...and Bea loves Winnie.

Boden was in the same zone apparently, yelling, "Look! No hands!"

Boden LOOOOOOVES Winnie.

India can hang on tight for trotting too, never afraid this little lady.

And India loves Winnie too!

Beck...really wants to love riding Winnie, but technically, he prefers to enjoy her from a distance.

(Still, he was a good sport for one round. :))

Noble is such a natural on horseback. His athleticism is always amazing and he's so relaxed.

It's just easy for him. I think we have a future cowboy here!

Aw, Winnie Girl, you're such a fun family member! Thanks for all the memories.

"Harness the horses; mount, O horsemen!"
Jeremiah 46:4
